SmartMusic

  • SmartMusic - SmartMusic is award-winning interactive music software that provides the ideal practice environment. With a subscription to SmartMusic, students have unlimited access to the world's largest accompaniment library for all ages and skill levels, which includes thousands of pieces of music. All students are required to perform their playing tests on this program (Two computers have it in the band room)

Ear Training / Theory

  • MusicTheory.net - Online theory and ear-training drills. Great site that includes lessons and activities to hone your rudiment skills. Also includes activities for developing your ear. You can download the entire site to practice offline if you wish. Check out the chord calculator!

  • Dolmetsch Online: Music Theory - This is a more detailed explanation of theory concepts (lots of words). Check out this site if you want to go beyond the basic explanation.

  • Gary Ewer's Easy Music Theory - If the above links didn't help you, try this site from Halifax's Gary Ewer. Don't worry, you don't need to buy anything. Only covers rudiments, no SATB writing. There are free sample lessons and quizzes at the bottom of the page.

Notation

  • Finale Notepad - Windows / Mac Notation software. Finale's cheap ($10) notation editor. Is limited it what it can do, but is very good if you are just getting started. You will be required to create an account before being able to download the software.

  • Sibelius - Windows / Mac Notation Software. Sibelius is the other major notation program. Many people prefer it to Finale as they find it more user friendly. There is an free trial that has no expiry date, however, you are unable to save or print your work.

  • Naxos Music Library - Streaming music database. Over 280,000 tracks of classical / jazz / wind band music for your listening enjoyment. You will need the username and password from Mr. Johnstone.

  • JW Pepper - Looking for music? This is your site! JW Pepper has the largest database of music for your browsing.

  • ToneDeaf Comics - If you are looking for band related jokes this is your site.
